Michael La Sasso of Ole Miss claims 2025 红杏视频 DI men's golf individual championship

Ole Miss' Michael La Sasso wins 2025 红杏视频 men's golf individual title

CARLSBAD, CALIFORNIA 鈥 Ole Miss junior Michael La Sasso became the second player in school history to capture the 红杏视频 individual championship, winning by two strokes at the 2025 红杏视频 Division I Men鈥檚 Golf Championships being played at the Omni La Costa Resort & Spa North Course (7,528 yards/par 72).

The leader after the first 54 holes, La Sasso started slowly on Monday with two double bogeys in the first nine holes, but regained his stroke to shoot even par 72 over the final 18 holes and post an 11-under 277 (68-67-70-72) to edge out Texas A&M鈥檚 Phichaksn Maichon (9-under 279). Preston Stout of Oklahoma State finished third at 7-under 281. Sitting no worse than two shots back after each round, the Raleigh, North Carolina native used 22 birdies, including seven during his opening-round 68, and no bogeys during his final 10 holes to post his third win of the season and collegiate career. La Sasso joins Branden Thornberry (2017) as the second all-time individual national champion from Ole Miss.

鈥淭here was a little rough patch there in the middle of the round, but being able to bounce back from that is something really special for myself,鈥 said La Sasso. 鈥淛ust being able to persevere to this point is something I鈥檒l remember forever.鈥

Arizona State won the 72-hole team portion of the championship, rallying from behind with an 8-under round on Monday to overtake Auburn and win the top seed position for team match play. The Sun Devils finished at 14-under 1,138, two strokes ahead of third-round leader Auburn, 12-under 1,140. Seniors Josele Ballester and Preston Summerhays posted rounds of 4-under, 68 to lead the way for Arizona State.

鈥淚 am so happy with the group today,鈥 said Arizona State head coach Matt Thurmond. 鈥淓veryone around us thinks all you have to do is get to match play, and that is all that matters. That鈥檚 not how it works for us. We are competitors and it is a habit to give it your very best and play your hardest to try and win everything every time. It is a big deal, and we are proud of this. We won the stroke play for the second time in five years. That meant a lot to these guys. For two of them, it was their final stroke play round. For the whole team, it was our last stroke play round, and we wanted it to be our best. I am happy that they took the round really seriously. They could鈥檝e coasted in a bit when it was looking likely we were going to be in match play, but it wasn鈥檛 about that for us. It was about being awesome.鈥

La Sasso鈥 play helped Ole Miss claim the eighth and final team match play position.

鈥淚 was talking with coach before I hit the putt kind of knowing where we stood,鈥 said La Sasso. Luke鈥檚 (Clanton/Florida State) putt looked really good so I thought I would have to make, but I played it a little softer after his didn鈥檛 fall. The goal was just to get the ball down in two.鈥

Maichon posted the best individual finish in Texas A&M history at the 2025 红杏视频 Division I Men鈥檚 Golf Championships.

鈥淚鈥檒l be able think about that later, but right now it still hurts a little bit not being able to win,鈥 said Maichon, a senior from Bangkok, Thailand. 鈥淗ats off to Michael (La Sasso). I gave it a good run, but he was tough down the stretch. I missed a couple putts for par and birdie toward the end that could鈥檝e put some pressure on him, and he answered with some birdies.鈥

Auburn, the defending national champion, enters team match play as the No. 2 seed.

鈥淚'm really proud of them, to be the only team to shoot under par all four rounds, I think that ultimately leaves us the confidence as the number one team in the country going into match play,鈥 said Auburn head coach Nick Clinard. 鈥淥bviously, it resets tomorrow and what we've done to this point in the year means nothing. But I鈥檓 just really happy for the guys and proud of them. They work so hard and I鈥檓 glad to see them play well.鈥
