The DII men's lacrosse finals: A team-by-team breakdown
It's wild how much the landscape of DII men's lacrosse has shifted in the past three seasons. Every national champion since 2002 is or will no longer be part of DII by the start of next season, with programs either switching divisions or schools closing. However, through it all, the one constant has been Adelphi, which picked up its eighth national championship last season.
That's why it is impressive that the reigning champs enter the championship game with a program-record 18 wins. The key to the Panthers' success has been balance: Adelphi owns the fourth-best scoring offense in DII and the second-best scoring defense in the divisionl. This balance was on full display in the tournament, with Adelphi winning its first two games by a score of 44-16.
The Panthers are led by a trio of award winners: Attack Braden Donnellan 鈥 who is second in DII with both 71 assists and 5.74 points per game 鈥 was the NE10 player of the year, Ries Bower was defensive player of the year, and Dylan Renner 鈥 who has the fifth-best save percentage in DII at 60.1 percent 鈥 was goalkeeper of the year.
Opposite the Panthers is Tampa, a relative newcomer to the powerhouse department. The Spartans had never made a championship game until 2022, and here they are, back for a second chance just three years later. The last time Tampa won, it finished the season 21-0 鈥 and is looking to again go perfect in its quest for No. 2.
Attack Ryan Kemp leads the way. The SSC offensive player of the year was third in the conference in goals per game (2.0) and fourth in points per game (3.0). However, this scoring attack is deep, as Davis Lindsey and Jackson Bashaw each found the net aplenty this season. The trio accounted for 130 goals and 61 assists on the attack. Connor Theriault will look to hold things down against this big Adelphi offense 鈥 he was the SSC first-team goalie in 2025.
Predicting Tampa vs. Adelphi
These two powers have met three times before, with Tampa holding the edge with a 2-1 series lead. Adelphi has that stingy defense, but Tampa makes it difficult with so many scorers. That's what the Spartans' defense will have to focus on as well, as both Noah Gibson and Michael Durnin scored 60-plus goals this season 鈥 both of which were in the top 11 in DII in goals scored. I think that gives Adelphi the edge, but it is going to be close.
Prediction: Adelphi 14, Tampa 12
